Kansas State University Salina provides a small campus atmosphere with a professional learning environment built on theory, research and industry application in the classroom. The campus is also home to an elite aviation program that has more Master Certified Flight Instructors than any other college or university and is located adjacent to a 12,000-foot runway. The Salina campus sees an approximate 97 percent placement rate of its students in either employment or higher education after graduation.
Students can choose from 16 undergraduate programs and a Professional Master of Technology, making the university an equally diverse community of traditional and nontraditional students. There are close to 1000 Wildcats enrolled at K-State Salina with 82 percent being Kansas natives.
Small class sizes mean a more personalized learning experience. For example, first-year English and speech courses are limited to 25 students. Engineering technology and aviation maintenance students begin their hands-on education the very first semester and private pilot students begin flying the second week of school.
They have the opportunity to live in suite-style residence halls and be involved in more than 30 clubs or organizations.
Students living on campus pay tuition, fees, room and board. Students in the professional pilot program will also have flight costs.
Two 100-bed suite-style residence halls are located conveniently on campus. New students are encouraged, but not required, to live on campus during their freshmen year. Computer laboratories and printers are available in each hall and hi-speed internet connections are available within each room at no additional costs. Laundry facilities are available on each floor and Resident Assistants plan events nearly every week.
In 1965, the Kansas State Legislature created Schilling Institute after the Schilling Air Force Base closed. In 1969 it was renamed the Kansas Technical Institute and in 1988 it became the Kansas College of Technology. The Kansas College of Technology merged with Kansas State University on April 25, 1991.

In 2011, it was one of the first universities in the nation to offer an Unmanned Aircraft Systems degree.

The Salina campus is one of three in the Kansas State University system. Salina has a population of about 50,000 and offers a variety of local and national restaurants, shopping, arts, and entertainment. It is about an hour from the Manhattan campus, making it convenient for you to cheer on the Wildcats at home games.
Kansas Wesleyan University is a liberal arts institution located in Salina, Kansas. Founded in 1886, it maintains a covenant relationship with the United Methodist Church and is supported by the Great Plains Conference . The school's accreditation was reaffirmed in 2007 by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The University is divided academically into six divisions and eighteen departments. Courses are offered for more than 60 undergraduate majors and programs , and one graduate degree, the MBA. Introduced for fall 2015 are 13 new majors and 17 new programs and pre-professional tracks, plus a brand new Liberal Studies Curriculum Core of courses and the new Wesleyan Heritage course. Signature programs include Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Nursing, Christian Ministry, Teacher Education, and Environmental Studies and Community Resilience.

Teacher Education

The University of Kansas School of Medicine campus in Salina was created to address the critical shortage of physicians in Kansas. This innovative medical education program is aimed at students with a strong desire to practice in rural areas.
With eight students admitted each year, the Salina campus is the smallest four-year medical education site in the country. University leaders believe it can serve as a model for the nation.
The educational environment in Salina is as high-tech as it it is intimate. Students learn with their peers on the Kansas City and Wichita campuses via interactive video and podcasts. Other training takes place in the offices of rural physicians and at the Salina Regional Health Center, which is adjacent to the school's Braddick Building.
The KU School of Medicine-Salina is housed primarily in the Braddick Building on the Salina Regional Health Center Campus. In addition to the medical student classrooms the clinical skills labs, human anatomy lab, testing center, student study areas, and student lounge are all located in the Braddick Building.
The curriculum in Salina is identical to that at the School of Medicine campuses in Kansas City and Wichita. In the first two years, it is delivered by on-site and distance education. Lectures are given using interactive televideo, and podcasting is available for all students. These lectures and podcasts are supplemented with various types of clinical skills, laboratory and group activities. The Salina program features a core group of basic scientists backed by a large team of experts in all relevant basic science fields in Kansas City. During their third and fourth years, medical students will complete required elective clinical clerkships. These clerkships will be located at Salina Regional Health Center, local physician officies, and at other hospitals and physician offices in the region.
Salina has a vibrant and active medical community with about 120 physicians practicing all specialties at the Salina Regional Health Center, a 390-bed regional hospital. This hospital serves as a major referral center for patients and critical access hospitals from a wide geographic region. It has a strong family medicine residency program, supported by a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) medical-home practice. The city has a 50:50 mix of specialty-to-primary care physicians in Salina. The physician-to-student ratio is over 4:1.
A Standardized Patient (SP) at KU Med is a well person portraying a patient with certain medical concerns in a realistic encounter with a medical student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Salina, Kansas. Some encounters involve only the taking of a history and counseling by the medical student and others involve a limited physical exam (always non-invasive).
Specific Cases
As an SP you are expected to learn "facts" about the case that you will be portraying. These "facts" are just like the facts in your own personal situation, except they are not about you; they are about the fictitious person that you are portraying. You will be expected to memorize these "facts." Your portrayal of the case will be much like when you visit your own doctor, except you will respond to a student's questions with the "facts" that you have memorized.
